A dedicated server (also known as Bare Metal Server) is a physical, high-performance computer located in a data center and provided exclusively to a single customer, either on a rental or ownership basis. Unlike VPS or cloud solutions, a dedicated server is not shared with other users: the client has full access to all hardware resources, including the CPU, RAM, storage devices, and network interfaces.
What is a dedicated server used for?
Dedicated servers are chosen for workloads that require high performance, reliability, and security, such as:
-
hosting high-traffic websites, applications, and online services;
-
processing large volumes of data;
-
running corporate systems like CRM and ERP platforms;
-
operating game servers that require stable performance and low latency.
A single dedicated server can also be subdivided into multiple virtual machines (VPS) using virtualization technologies such as KVM, OpenVZ, or LXC, with each virtual server assigned to a separate user or purpose.
Advantages of dedicated servers
-
Performance.
Since all resources belong to a single customer, applications run faster and more predictably. -
Control.
Full administrative access allows the server to be configured and optimized for specific workloads. -
Security.
Data isolation and exclusive access significantly reduce the risk of security breaches caused by other tenants. -
Reliability.
Enterprise-grade hardware and backup options provide a high level of stability and fault tolerance.
Disadvantages of dedicated servers
-
Cost.
Dedicated servers are significantly more expensive than VPS or cloud hosting, which can be a major expense for small businesses. -
Technical complexity.
Managing a dedicated server requires system administration skills. Without proper expertise, configuration and maintenance can be challenging. -
Limited scalability.
Unlike cloud servers, which can be upgraded in minutes, scaling a dedicated server usually involves hardware changes and takes more time.

Dedicated servers remain a key part of the hosting market and are widely used by large enterprises and organizations that handle mission-critical workloads and sensitive data.
