Hosting is a service provided by specialized companies (hosting providers) that place websites, applications, and other online projects on their servers and ensure their continuous availability on the internet, typically 24/7.

Without hosting, a website or online application cannot be accessed by users, as it must be stored on a server that is permanently connected to the network.

Types of hosting

There are several main types of hosting, each suitable for different use cases:

  • Shared hosting (also known as web hosting).
This is the most common and affordable type of hosting. It is designed primarily for hosting websites. Multiple websites from different users are hosted on the same server and share its resources. Shared hosting is well suited for beginners, small websites with low traffic, and users who do not require full control over the server.

  • Virtual server (VPS or VDS).
A virtual server emulates the functionality of a dedicated server, while multiple virtual machines run on a single physical server. Each virtual machine can have its own operating system. This type of hosting is suitable for websites and projects that require more resources and flexibility than shared hosting. Users gain greater control over the server environment and configuration options.

  • Cloud hosting.
Cloud hosting provides virtualized resources similar to VPS/VDS, delivered on demand over the internet. It is an optimal choice for websites and applications with seasonal or unpredictable traffic, as well as for users who need rapid scalability and high flexibility.

  • Dedicated server.
With a dedicated server, the user rents an entire physical server without sharing it with others. This option is required for large, high-traffic websites and resource-intensive projects, or when specific software, configurations, or maximum control over the hardware are needed.

  • Colocation.
Colocation involves placing the customer’s own physical server in a hosting provider’s data center. It is intended for companies that already own server hardware and require maximum control, while benefiting from professional data center infrastructure, power, cooling, and connectivity.

According to research by Mordor Intelligence, the global hosting market was valued at approximately USD 62.23 billion in 2023. It is expected to grow to USD 109.67 billion by 2029, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 9.2%.

By some estimates, there are over 600,000 hosting providers worldwide. Around 100,000 of them are large companies, while the rest are small and medium-sized businesses. The number of hosting providers continues to grow due to low barriers to market entry and increasing demand for hosting services.

Competition in the hosting market is extremely intense. Providers continuously introduce new features and services to attract customers, while hosting prices tend to decline over time.
